Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

These instructions will make a 7 inch flexible bangle. To adjust the size of the bangle, modify the number of times you repeat the herringbone "eye" pattern. As you work, test the length around the widest part of your hand to make sure it will slip on easily.
  1. Cut a length of beading thread, as long as you are comfortable working with (I like to start with 4 or 5 feet). As you work you will need to add more thread; please watch our video on how to tie off and add new thread. Thread a size 12 beading needle.
  2. Using the red 10/0 Delica beads, create a ladder stitch foundation row that is four beads long.
  3. Next, watch our video on how to do tubular herringbone bead weaving. Based on the technique shown in the video, join the ends of the foundation row together so it is closed up into a tight square.
  4. Weave two rows of tubular herringbone stitch. Since you are only working with two herringbone columns, your stitching should work up in a square formation.
  5. On your third row, add one copper 11/0 Delica bead between your two herringbone columns on both sides of the piece.
  6. On your fourth row, add two copper beads between your columns on both sides of the piece.
  7. On your fifth row, add three copper beads between your columns on both sides of the piece.
  8. On your sixth row, do not add any red seed beads. Instead, add one Austrian crystal crystal round bead to your needle. Then bring your needle across and sew down through one of the beads on top of your second column. Sew back through the beads of the previous stitch on that side, and come back out of the top of the first column.
  9. Add two red beads to your needle as you normally would, but instead of sewing up through the corresponding bead of the opposite column, sew back down through the previous row with the three copper beads, and then up out the top of the second column. You will work up the two red beaded columns this way, so your thread doesn't pass in front of the Austrian crystal bead in the middle.
  10. Repeat the previous step three more times, so you have two unconnected columns on either side of the Austrian crystal bead in the middle.
  11. On your next row, add two red beads as usual, then add three copper beads between the columns on both sides.
  12. On your next row, add two copper beads between the columns on both sides.
  13. On your next row, add one copper bead between the columns on both sides.
  14. Repeat steps 4-13 seven more times, so you have eight repetitions of the herringbone "eye" pattern.
  15. Now you will join both ends of your weaving to close the bracelet. To do this, align the two ends and sew up through the beads of your original foundation row as if they were the next row of beads. Weave the ends of the thread back through your stitching to secure it and snip off the rest.
  16. Enjoy your bracelet!
