Neapolitan Fringe Earrings

PROJECT E2296
Designer: Kat Silvia
Skill Level: Advanced
Miyuki Delica seed beads fit like little bricks in these Brick Stitch fringe earrings. A trio of Neapolitan colors are blended in a geometric pattern to provide a little movement and sway in this bead woven design.
Instructions

Note: Components and tools listed within this INSTRUCTIONS box and the printer-friendly PDF, if available, may have been discontinued since this project was published. Refer to the PURCHASE COMPONENTS and TOOLS AND OTHER SUPPLIES sections for current availability.

By following the instructions below you will make one earring. Repeat all instructions to make the second earring.
  1. If you are unfamiliar with Brick Stitch, please watch our video: How To Do Brick Stitch Bead Weaving. For this pattern you will also need to know how to make decreases in Brick Stitch and you can learn how to do that in our video: How to Make Increases and Decreases in Brick Stitch. Please see our Printer Friendly PDF for Full Color Beading Pattern.
  2. Please begin at the widest point on the bead weaving. I recommend cutting off about 8 feet of Nymo thread and using a beeswax thread conditioner. Leave a tail of about 4 feet when you begin your first row of ladder stitch then work your way up towards the top tip of the earring. You will decrease the stitch until you reach the top. To add the last bead, it will lay sideways by coming up through one bead and down the bead next to it in that final row of two.
  3. Leave the tail and remove the needle. You can tie this off when you're all done. Attach the needle to the long tail at the beginning. Continue the brick stitch to finish the last few rows with the decrease.
  4. Then, please watch our video: How to Add Beaded Fringe to Brick Stitch Bead Weaving. In this video you will see how to add a strand of fringe and how to finish this earring with a jump ring and earring hook. Once you have completed your fringe, simply tie off and weave in your tails and you're all done.

Beautiful earrings I would make again for gifts!

These earrings take a little while to make but they work up beautifully. I used 4# Fireline instead of the NYMO just because that's what I happened to have and as far as I could tell it made no difference. The only changes I would make are:
1) In step 2 where it says to leave a 4' tail when you begin the first row of ladder stitch and start to work up, I definitely needed about 2' MORE than that if I didn't want to tie on additional thread when I got to the fringe, although it wasn't hard to add the thread - the Delicas give you plenty of room to hide knots.
2) I found it helpful to add a couple knots at the apex of each fringe to keep the tiny bit of "play" (that keeps the fringe from being stiff) from transferring from one fringe to the next. Again, this was easy because the Delicas hide knots so well.
I get lots of compliments on these earrings and will make some to give to friends as gifts at Christmas. It will be lots of fun mixing the colors up for different looks.
