How to Open and Close a Jump Ring

Never pull a jump ring apart! Learn how to properly open and close a jump ring for beading and jewelry-making. Following these steps will put the least amount of stress on your rings. Watch our instructional video tutorial or see below for written instructions and step-by-step photos.

For more beading basics, check out our instructional videos on Basic Beading Techniques.

  1. Use your chain nose pliers to grab one side of the jump ring with the open slit at the top.
Grab One Side
  1. Grab the other side of the jump ring with another pair of chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, or other tool that you have around. Twist the jump ring open by pushing one side away from the other.

  1. To close the jump ring, simply twist the sides back in place so that you close the gap and return the jump ring to its original position.
