Instructions:
- To begin this project, please watch the video on How Braid Beaded Kumihimo with Long Magatama Beads. This video shows how to make the braid portion of this necklace. If you have never done Kumihimo before, please watch How to Braid Beaded Kumihimo. This second video will show you how to load your beads onto your bobbins, set up your threads, and get started.
-
For this necklace, cut 8 lengths of Super-Lon cord in black, 48" long each. Tie their ends together into an overhand knot. Onto 1 of the strands, string 1 tube of matte gunmetal Long Magatama beads and wind the thread and beads onto a bobbin. Repeat this with 3 other strands. Now take 1 of the remaining strands and string 1 tube of shiny gunmetal Long Magatama beads and wind the thread and beads onto a bobbin. Repeat this with 3 other strands.
-
Thread your knot through the hole in the middle of your Kumihimo disc and attach a weight.
-
Line your strands up on the Kumihimo board so that one strand with matte beads is on the right side of the 16 dot and one strand with matte beads is on the left side of the 16 dot. Place one strand with matte beads on the right side of the 32 dot and one strand with matte beads on the left side of the 32 dot. Place one strand with shiny beads on the right side of the 8 dot and one strand with shiny beads on the left side of the 8 dot. Place one strand with shiny beads on the right side of the 24 dot and one strand with shiny beads on the left side of the 24 dot.
-
Following what you learned in the videos, braid 1/4" without any beads. Next braid 13 - 14 inches using your Long Magatamas. Once you have braided about 13 inches, place the necklace onto your neck to see how much more, if any, you need to braid. The clasp and cord end caps will add about 1.5" so keep this in mind. Braid with the beads until the necklace is the desired length. After you are happy with how long it is, braid another 1/4" without beads.
-
Please watch the video on How to Tie Off and Finish Kumihimo Braid Ends. From what you learned in the video, glue your barrel cord ends to each side of the braid using E6000 glue.
-
To attach your clasp, open an oval jump ring and link it to one of the cord ends as well as one half of your clasp. Close the jump ring. Go to the other side of the necklace and repeat this step.
-
Enjoy!

Variations
Instead of using colors that blend together for this necklace, try using contrasting colors for a more dramatic look. When substituting in items, pay attention to sizes and styles to make sure all your pieces will fit together.

Tip: Check package quantities for each component. You may have extra material to make more than one finished project, or will have leftovers for other projects. In some cases, adding on just one more package of a component may be all you need to make multiple pieces.
