The Red Queen Necklace, Earring, and Ring Set
Project S604 Designer: Julie Bean
"Off with your head!" said the Red Queen in the classic Lewis Carroll novel Alice's Adventures in
Wonderland. This heart and crown bedecked necklace, earring, and ring set will be the perfect final touch

Note: As an added touch on the ring, I drew a line of gold around the edge using a Krylon 18kt. Gold Leafing Pen. This can be found at most hardware stores, some art stores, and online. It is literally like spray paint in pen form. You will also need a small, clean, disposable cup to mix your resin in and a stir stick of some sort such as a popsicle stick. |
-
Since the focal point of this project is the resin hearts, let's begin by making our hearts.
-
First condition your mold with mold release spray. Spray some into each mold cavity and allow to dry.
-
Here is a great to watch which will show you how to mix your resin, add pigment, and pour into a mold. Follow the direction in the video, mixing 1oz of resin and adding 2 drops of red pigment so that the entire batch is an opaque red. Remember to stir until all the striations are gone. Pour into each of your 4 heart molds, pouring just up to the top edge but not going over. Let cure for 3 days.
-
After it has fully cured, remove each heart from the mold by depressing on the backside of each mold and popping the resin out.
-
Place a dime size amount of E6000 onto the back of one of the hearts. Turn over and center on top of one of the black filigree square stamping but make sure the orientation of the stamping is that of a diamond not a square (there is a small hole in one of the tips of the filigree, make sure this hole is facing downward) . Press the heart into place. You will notice that some of the E6000 will seep through the holes in the filigree backside. You can either carefully wipe it away or you can lay it down on a piece of plastic (such as the little baggy the filigree came in) and let dry. I chose to do the latter. Repeat this same step with another 2 of your hearts and filigree stampings. Let dry for several hours.
-
While your hearts are drying, take your 4th heart and place an eraser head size dab of E6000 in the center of the back side. Position your glue on ring tab over this part and press into place. A tip for helping this dry: place the heart back into the mold so that the ring band stands up right and will glue straight.
-
a 5mm jump ring and link it to the hole at the base of your black filigree and also the loop at the top of the crown charm. Close the jump ring. Do this to all of your heart/filigree combos.
-
Now take your 1.25mm metal hole punch pliers and punch a hole in the top corner of each of the three black diamond filigrees. For our necklace, open and link a 5mm jump ring through this hole and close the jump ring. For the two earrings, open the loop at the base of the earring the same way you would and link it through the filigree hole. Close the loop back up. The earrings are all done!
-
Cut your 24" black ball chain to the desired length for your necklace. I chose to cut mine down to 18". Thread one end of the ball chain through the jump ring attached to your filigree/heart pendant, pull it so that half of the chain is on each side of the necklace. Attach the ball chain connector clasp to one end. Your necklace is all done!
-
For your ring, you can either leave it as is and it is all done - lovely! Or you can use a Krylon paint pen in gold and draw a gold band around the base of the heart, making it look as if you have the resin heart in a gold bezel setting. If you choose to draw the gold line, just be careful to let it dry for at least 30 minutes before touching.
|
TIP: If you like the look of the gold rim along the edge of the heart as pictured in the ring, go ahead and draw a gold edge along all the resin hearts before gluing them to the black filigrees.
Tip: Check package quantities for each component. You may have extra material to make more than one finished project, or will have leftovers for other projects. In some cases, adding on just one more package of a component may be all you need to make multiple pieces.
