Ruby
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral Corundum, which is the second hardest natural mineral known. All colors of corundum other than red or white are called Sapphire. The ruby’s red color, which can range from blood red to light pink, is caused by trace amounts of the element chromium. Ruby is considered one of the four precious stones along with Sapphire, Emerald and Diamond. Also worth noting, the first lasers were made from artificial ruby crystals.
